Can doing something hard make the rest of life easier?
The research question behind episode one: what the evidence on exercise and self-control can and cannot tell us.
01The research question
If you choose to do something difficult, like training when you would rather stay in bed, does that effort help you handle other challenges in the rest of your life?

- Authors and year
- Journal
- Journal name
- Design
- e.g. randomised controlled trial, observational, meta-analysis
- Participants
- Who and how many
- Duration
- How long the study ran
03What it found
Summarise the main results in plain English. Use the paper's own figures and say what was measured. Separate what the study showed from what it suggests.
04Limitations
What this study cannot tell us. Consider sample size and who took part, whether it shows cause or only correlation, how long it ran, how outcomes were measured, and whether the result has been replicated.
05Putting it to work
Practical, proportionate ways to apply the finding. Keep the advice in line with how strong the evidence is.
